Descripción

El volcán Chaitén tiene una altura de 1.120 m s.n.m. y está compuesto por un conjunto de domos ubicados al interior de una caldera de 3 km de diámetro, formada aparentemente por el colapso de un antiguo volcán. Su último ciclo eruptivo ocurrió entre los años 2008 y 2009 y estuvo asociado a la formación de columnas eruptivas de hasta 20 km de altura, siendo una de las erupciones más explosivas registradas en Chile en el último siglo.

Cómo llegar

A unos 20 km al norte de Chaitén se encuentra el acceso al sendero que conduce al borde de la caldera del volcán Chaitén en el parque nacional Pumalín Douglas-Tompkins, donde se puede apreciar el imponente domo
formado en su interior.
