La erupción que comenzó en mayo del 2008 cubrió de ceniza gran parte del territorio cercano a la localidad de Chaitén. Las lluvias posteriores hicieron que enormes cantidades de este material volcánico fueran canalizadas por el Río blanco que cruza la ciudad de Chaitén y desemboca en el mar. En ese lugar, se depositó gran parte de los sedimentos transportados modificando significativamente la línea de costa, la cual se desplazó cerca de 400 m hacia el mar. En esta nueva playa se encuentra material piroclástico formado por pómez y ceniza, escombros y troncos quemados que fueron arrastrados por este lahar.
