Descripción

Identificación: L. 48 cm. El más grande de los pilpilenes y completamente oscuro. Pico largo, profundo, muy comprimido lateralmente y de punta roma; de color rojo anaranjado con punta amarilla. Patas rosado pálido con uñas negras. Iris amarillo; anillo orbital rojo anaranjado. capuchón, partes inferiores, rémiges y cola negro brillante. Resto de las partes superiores y dorso alar café chocolate uniforme. Superficie interior alar con zona plateada por los rémiges y sus coberteras mayores.

Hábitat: Estrictamente costero. Playas e islotes rocosos. Ocasionalmente en sectores arenosos adyacentes.

Hábitos: En parejas o en grupos familiares. Territorial durante el periodo reproductivo. En bandadas durante el periodo de reposo. Se alimenta activamente de moluscos en la zona intermareal y de rompiente. Se asocia con Playero de Rompientes y Zarapito. Nidifica en islotes rocosos o en sectores aislados de la costa. Emite un fuerte, largo, y lastimero silbido. Confiado, aunque mantiene su distancia.

Estado de conservación: Preocupación menor
