Descripción

Identificación: L. 44 cm. Corpulenta e inconfundible ave pescadora de ambientes acuáticos del sur de Chile. Pico gris oscuro, recto y macizo; base de mandíbula córnea. Patas grisáceas. Leve dimorfismo sexual. Macho: Cabeza gris azulado oscuro, con cresta eréctil. Mancha loral, garganta y collar blancos. Partes superiores y dorso alar gris azulado; plumas de raquis negro. Partes inferiores rufo castaño. Cola negruzca con delgado aunque profuso barrado blanco. Hembra: Pecho gris azulado y resto de las partes inferiores rufo castaño, separados por una delgada banda blanca en la parte superior del abdomen.

Hábitat: Orillas arboladas y barrancas de ríos, lagunas y lagos. También en bahías marinas protegidas, incluyendo fiordos y canales. Se asocia a piscinas de cultivos de salmones. Desde el nivel del mar hasta los 1.000 m.

Hábitos: Solitario, en parejas o en grupos familiares. Se posa sobre ramas de árboles, cables y puentes localizados a orillas de ríos; también sobre rocas. Desde su percha se zambulle para capturar peces. Vuelo ondulante acompañado de un estridente grito de alerta. Confiado.

Estado de conservación: Menor riesgo.
